"Cocktail" was born back in the early years of the United States, when cockfights were allowed. The winner got the the tail of the loser's cock.
And since winning is a good reason to blow your mind with alcohol, we say "cocktail" to alcoholic drinks because of the wise saying:
"Let´s have a drink on the cocks´s tails!".
